Sami Band Weaving is characterized by its complexity of geometric patterns that can be woven using simple tools.
These 7 thread Saami band weaving patterns can be woven on a variety of different styles of Saami heddles such as the Beaivi, the Sunna or standard weaving heddles.

In this pattern collection I am using a Sunna 7 band weaving heddle. The Sunna heddle has 32 background warp threads and 7 pattern threads. The pattern threads are generally a bit thicker than the ground warp yarns. The heavier weight of yarn helps to make the patterned design more pronounced. If the warp yarns are of the same weight then you can double up the pattern threads using 2 warp threads instead of 1 thread per weaving dent.

In the Sunna reed, the pattern threads ‘float’ in the centre of the warp as you raise or lower the reed. The pattern threads can be picked up or dropped according to the pattern design. This lifts the pattern to the surface of the band. Dropping the other pattern threads causes them to be lowered below the surface of the ground weave and creates a mirror image on the reverse of the band.
