Nalbinding & Indigo Vat

Nalbinding a Sleeve for my Indigo Vat

In order for an Indigo Fermentation Vat to work properly the Vat must be kept warm. In summer months this isn’t usually an issue, but in winter it can be. I use a large beaker for my Vat and keep it warm by using a heated beer brewing mat. On colder nights that isn’t quite enough heat. So I thought that making a warm wooly Sleeve might help.

For this project I used leftover wool yarns from my stash. Nalbinding is perfect for using up odds and ends of wool. Just grab your nalbinding needle, a bit of yarn and start needling.

For most of the sleeve I used the Finnish 2+2 nalbinding stitch.

  • Pick up a new stitch from the previous row and pick up one old stitch on the previous row.
  • Pick up 2 stitches from the loops behind your thumb.
  • Turn the needle counter-clockwise.
  • Then pick up 2 remaining stitches on your thumb
  • and thread the needle through the stitches on your thumb to form the next loop.
  • I made a few videos outlining this process. The original videos were streamed on the Makers and Crafters on Twitch.

I then edited the video into sections and posted the videos onto my YouTube Channel.
